Painted pianos will appear across central Florida again as Pop-Up Pianos brings music and art to Seminole County for a second season in March, culminating with a piano ‘idol’ concert, contest and auction April 6 at 2:30 pm in the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center in Sanford. This art and music event is a collaboration and fund-raiser for the Steinway Society of Central Florida, Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center and Seminole Cultural Arts Council (SCAC).
Ten sponsored pianos will be painted by respected local artists in February and set out across Seminole County March 20 –April 4 in Sanford, Altamonte, Casselberry, Oviedo and Longwood. Each will be in a public place and available for the public to play. Each has a team of sponsor, artist and student pianist; performances will be held. Pianos, artists and sponsors will be featured on Pop Up Pianos Seminole website and facebook page.
Pianos will be moved to the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center in Sanford and auctioned off April 6 after concert and entertainment featuring all pianos onstage. There will be a ‘piano idol contest’ where attendees can vote for their favorite piano/artist. The event will be hosted by Carol Stein and Bob Frier, FOX 35 news anchor.
-- There will be a VIP piano preview reception April 6 at 1:30 pm; tickets are $20 and include 20 votes, reserved concert seating and drink ticket.
-- Regular admission for the 2:30 pm concert/auction is $10 and includes 10 votes
There was such a positive response from our inaugural Pop-Up fundraiser in 2012, that the Steinway Society, Wayne Densch Center and Seminole Cultural Arts Council decided to offer it to the community again," said Gary Grimes, Steinway Society president, who founded Pop-up with spouse Kathy Grimes. "We are indebted to the hard-working volunteers from all three organizations which made the initial event a success."
Piano sponsors so far include Stan Van Gundy, Florida Hospital, Sihle Insurance Group, Helpful Hands, Rockstar Music, SCAC, Steinway Piano Galleries, The Steinway Society of Central Florida, Wayne Densch and 434 Animal Hospital with a media grand piano from FOX 35/Orlando Sentinel (which will be painted by Seminole Artist of the Year Jeff Sonksen).
